Kefir 101: What is it and what are the benefits?

by Sophie Hanson

First things first - what is Kefir?

Kefir is a cultured, fermented drink with powerful benefits for gut health. Similar to its sister-beverage, Kombucha, Kefir is made using a natural ‘starter culture’ that combines yeast, protein and healthy bacteria which when fermented produces a live culture beverage rich in beneficial bacteria.

Commonly, kefir is made with dairy milk however it can also be made with plant-based milk or water alternatives. Some kefir, like Nexba’s Strawberry and Peach Kefir, is made with coconut water which results in a thinner, more drink-able texture. Plus, it’s vegan friendly!

Water based kefir is a fermented, carbonated beverage that is produced using water kefir grains. Also known as California bees and Japanese water crystals water kefir has been around since the 1800’s!

Is Kefir good for me?

Kefir has increased in popularity over the past few years mostly due to the growing awareness of its many health benefits. Kefir is loaded with nutrients and live cultures. Some of the key nutrients include B vitamins, potassium (beneficial for heart health) and calcium (important for strong and healthy bones).

Live cultures help to support growth of healthy bacteria in the gut which in turn, prevents any imbalances from occurring. As well as being a fantastic preventative, kefir can also aid to relieve symptoms in many gut-related health conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and urinary tract infections (UTI’s).

In addition to its vast digestive benefits, studies have shown that Kefir has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, as well as being helpful in lowering cholesterol and helping to support immune function. Go Kefir!

  • Use it in tzatziki in place of Greek yoghurt or mixed with lemon and olive oil for a simple yet satisfying salad dressing.
  • Make a kefir nice-cream! Nice cream is a healthy alternative to ice cream that is made using frozen banana. Adding kefir will not only help to create a smooth and creamy texture, but it will also enhance the nutritional value.
